Where the Water Is Actually Coming From
Four sources cover almost every damp wall we see in Jaipur, and each needs a different treatment:
- Rising dampness from the ground. Common in older construction built without a damp-proof course. Moisture is drawn up through the masonry by capillary action, so the damp patch starts at the skirting and works upward, usually to a fairly consistent height.
- Lateral seepage from an adjoining wall. In closely built areas, moisture migrates through a shared party wall from a neighbouring property that has not been treated. The giveaway is damp appearing on an internal wall that has no ground contact and no plumbing in it.
- A leaking pipe inside the wall. A slow leak from an embedded supply or drainage line produces a damp patch that stays wet regardless of season, which is what separates it from monsoon-driven seepage.
- External wall absorption. An untreated outer wall soaks up driving rain during monsoon and carries it through to the inside face. This one is seasonal and usually worst on the wall facing the prevailing rain.
Getting this wrong is expensive. Injection damp proofing on a wall whose real problem is a leaking pipe will fail, and so will surface treatment on a wall with active rising damp.

- Source identification. Moisture readings and pattern assessment to establish which of the four causes above you actually have.
- Removing failed material. Loose plaster, salt deposits and blistered paint are cut back to sound masonry. Treating over compromised plaster is the most common reason a job comes back.
- Treating the source. Chemical damp-proof course injection for rising damp, sealing and repair for a leaking embedded pipe, or exterior treatment where rain absorption is the cause.
- Re-plastering with a compatible system. Salt-resistant or breathable plaster where needed, so residual moisture can escape rather than being sealed in.

Older Jaipur Construction Needs a Different Approach
A lot of Jaipur housing predates modern damp-proofing entirely, and much of it combines original lime plaster with later cement-based patch repairs. Standard cement-based waterproof coatings can trap moisture inside an older lime-plastered wall instead of letting it breathe out, which over time causes more damage than it prevents. Why does the damp patch come back after painting over it?
Paint is not a waterproofing layer. If moisture is still reaching the wall from the ground, a neighbouring wall or a leaking pipe, it will push through fresh paint within a season, often faster than before because the trapped moisture now has nowhere to escape. The source has to be treated before the wall is refinished.
What is the white powder appearing on my damp wall?
That is efflorescence, salt carried out of the masonry by moisture and left behind as the water evaporates. It is a reliable sign that water is actively moving through the wall rather than a one-off spill, and it has to be removed back to sound plaster before any treatment is applied.
